TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – National Taiwan University (NTU) wants to build a student dormitory with 3,752 beds, but students are worried about sufficient parking spots for scooters, reports said Saturday (June 1).
The design for the building complex has been described as a “vertical village,” with bridges linking three wings. The project will be located in Taipei City near the intersection of Keelung Road and Xinhai Road, per CNA.
The cost has been estimated at NT$4.33 billion (US$133.27 million), and the plan is to time the opening of the facility for 2028 to coincide with NTU’s 100th anniversary.
Architect Lin Jou-min (林洲民), a former Taipei City urban development commissioner, said that 45.29% of the building space would be dedicated to shared activities for the students, including rooms for fitness, music, prayer, and table tennis. There are rooms for two students including a bathroom and rooms for four, he said.
At the NTU academic affairs meeting Saturday, student and teacher representatives voiced doubts about the number of parking spots provided for scooters. Lin said there would be room to park 232 cars, 350 scooters, and 2,390 bicycles. He added the number of motorcycles would be limited since they were banned from NTU campuses.
