TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Representative to the U.S. Alexander Yui (俞大㵢) threw the first pitch at Angels Stadium in Anaheim on Wednesday (May 29).
Coinciding with Taiwanese Heritage Night, the Los Angeles Angels and New York Yankees game drew over 1,000 Taiwanese-Americans from the Los Angeles area, per CNA. At the stadium entrance plaza, the Taiwan Tourism Administration and Taiwanese food vendors set up food and bubble tea stalls.
The event featured a performance by the Wing Stars, the cheerleading squad of the TSG Hawks, joined by 12 Taiwanese-American girls.
In a CNA interview, Yui said Taiwan and the U.S. share similar values in freedom, democracy, and human rights, and sports is another area where they connect. He noted that having so many Taiwanese compatriots attending the game exemplified this bond.
Yui added the focus of Taiwanese diplomats in the U.S. is to promote cooperation between Taiwan and the U.S. in defense, economic, and international organizations. “This year marks the 45th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act, symbolizing the strong Taiwan-U.S. relationship,” the diplomat said.
Ying Ying (螢螢), captain of the Wing Stars, said the cheerleading squad was formed less than six months ago. She described the opportunity to perform at such a prestigious venue as a rare and valuable experience, allowing the team to showcase their talents on a global stage.
