TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul met with National Security Council (NSC) Secretary-General Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) on Wednesday (May 29).
The two exchanged views on the regional situation and Taiwan-U.S. relations, according to an NSC press release. McCaul emphasized the purpose of his visit was to express bipartisan support in the U.S. Congress for Taiwan. The U.S. will continue to uphold its commitment to Taiwan and maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, he said.
Wu thanked McCaul and his delegation for visiting Taiwan after President Lai Ching-te(賴清德) and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim’s (蕭美琴) inauguration, which demonstrated concrete support for Taiwan’s thriving democracy. The secretary-general hoped that Congress would continue to aid Taiwan in strengthening its self-defense capabilities and further enhance the "rock-solid" partnership between Taiwan and the U.S.
McCaul’s delegation included Representatives Jimmy Panetta, Young Kim, Chrissy Houlahan, Joe Wilson, and Andy Barr. The lawmakers were in Taiwan for a five-day visit to meet with senior Taiwan officials and discuss regional security and trade. They are set to depart on Thursday (May 30).
