TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Heavy rain pummeled southern Taiwan on Saturday (May 25) afternoon, as the northern hemisphere’s first tropical depression looked likely to blow itself out.
The tropical depression TD01 was reported as being east of the Philippines’ southern island of Mindanao on Friday (May 24). Forecasters said it will turn northeast and though this will bring it closer to Taiwan, it should not have much of an effect.
Meanwhile, the south Taiwan seaside town of Kenting was inundated on Saturday, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
Heavy rain and extremely heavy rain warnings were in effect from Saturday afternoon. The inundation was mainly in the south and southeast, including Kaohsiung and Tainan, reaching as far up as Hualien.
Elsewhere, conditions were cloudy and with occasional showers, a weather pattern that looks to be repeated throughout next week. Daytime temperatures are likely to be warm and humid, hitting the low 30s C in some places.
