TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan renewed its driver's license reciprocity agreement with Washington state.
The deal was signed in 2014 between Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation and Communications and the Washington Department of Licensing. Washington was the eighth state to ink such an agreement with Taiwan.
The agreement applied to Taiwanese nationals or those with permanent residency with a class B driver's license for a small car. Over 5,000 Taiwanese residents in the state benefitted from the deal. Washington residents who have lived in Taiwan for over a year received the same treatment.
The agreement exemplifies the best practice of bilateral relations between Taiwan and the U.S., Marcus Glasper, the director of the Washington State Department of Licensing, said, per TVBS.
Last week, Taiwan inked a similar deal with Utah, becoming the first foreign government in Utah to do so.
Utah is the 37th state government in the U.S. to have a reciprocal driver's license agreement with Taiwan. The move will facilitate more exchanges in language education, religion, and other people-to-people engagement, per the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco.
It will also deepen the cooperation and friendship between Taiwan and the U.S., it added.
