TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The unemployment rate fell to 3.36% in April from the same month last year, recording its lowest level for the spring month in 24 years, the government confirmed Wednesday (May 22).
A positive performance for domestic demand and the services sector, as well as a recovery for the manufacturing sector were said to be the main reasons for the low jobless figure, according to the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS).
Employment in the hotel and restaurant sector has been rising for 20 months.
The April figure amounted to a drop of 0.02% from the March jobless rate, the second month-on-month decline in a row, per CNA. If adjusted for seasonal factors, unemployment fell to 3.39%.
The government said 403,000 people were out of work in April, or 2.000 fewer than in March, or 14,000 fewer than in April 2023. As to the employed, their total also declined by 2,000 over the same period to 11.57 million.
