TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 5.2 earthquake rattled northeast Taiwan at 4 p.m. on Wednesday (May 22), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
No injuries or damage from the quake were reported as of publication. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7, which gauges the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
The quake’s intensity registered a 4 in Hualien County and a 3 in Nantou County. An intensity level of 2 was recorded in Yilan County, Taichung County, Taichung, and Yunlin County.
An intensity level of 1 was measured in Chiayi County, Taoyuan, Miaoli County, Changhua County, Hsinchu County, Hsinchu, New Taipei, Chiayi, Tainan, and Pingtung County.
The CWA said its epicenter was 18.6 km south-southeast of Hualien County Hall, with a shallow focal depth of 5.3 km.
Aftershocks have continued in Hualien since a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the area on April 3.
