TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Schools in Keelung and four New Taipei districts have been closed to the public after a man convicted of attempted murder (殺人未遂罪) escaped from a psychiatric hospital on Sunday (May 19).
The man surnamed Chien (簡) escaped from a Keelung facility and took a bus headed towards Badouzi and Ruifang in New Taipei, reported CNA. Keelung announced on Monday (May 20) that schools would be closed to visitors until Wednesday (May 22), and the New Taipei Education Department said that Wanli, Xizhi, Pingxi, and Ruifang (District 4) would also be closed.
The 39-year-old man, who suffers from schizophrenia, had been placed under guardianship before his sentence was implemented. Keelung Police Department released surveillance footage showing Chien walking along Jiji Road after his escape, per CNA.
In addition, surveillance footage uploaded by a netizen to a Facebook group shows Chien at 10:48 a.m. Sunday, walking on the sidewalk of Zhongshan First Road near the city's No. 31 Bridge.

Keelung police on Tuesday released details of his escape route, saying Chien was last seen taking a bus from Yiyi Road towards Badouzi and Ruifang in New Taipei.

To safeguard the safety of teachers and students, the department asked schools to strengthen campus patrols and maintain close contact with police. Students are advised to travel in groups and avoid lingering outside.
Any suspicious individuals should be reported to the police and the school's security office immediately.
