TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Monday (May 20) extended congratulations to President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴).
Tsai took to Facebook wishing the new administration “all the best,” adding, “I believe they will continue to lead Taiwan forward, bringing more progress and development to our country.”
She expressed optimism about the country’s future, saying, “Taiwan will shine even brighter” under the leadership of Lai.
She thanked the Taiwanese for their support over the past years and pledged to “work hard for Taiwan in different positions and roles.”
In another Facebook message posted on Sunday evening, Tsai acknowledged the widespread support from the international community that helped Taiwan “to step onto the global stage and become an indispensable democratic partner.”
“I believe that the new government will continue to confidently move forward on the path of democracy and freedom," collaborating with countries around the world,” she said.
Lai and Hsiao were sworn in Monday morning during Taiwan’s 16th presidential and vice presidential inauguration ceremony. In his inaugural speech, Lai hoped China would “face the reality” of Taiwan’s existence and pledged to become a key force in upholding regional peace and stability to "ensure the world is free from fear of war."
