TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A man walking on a crosswalk in New Taipei on Thursday (May 16) was hit by a concrete truck and survived, but suffered multiple injuries.
At 3 p.m., a 31-year-old man surnamed Chang (張) was walking on a zebra crossing when a concrete truck suddenly hit him from behind, reported China Times. Fortunately, the 54-year-old driver surnamed Wu (吳) managed to stop before he ran over Chang.
Police said Wu was driving on Qianshui Road preparing to drive toward New Taipei's Sanxia District when he turned left on Jincheng Road in Tucheng District and struck Chang. Chang sustained abrasions and contusions to his left shoulder, elbows, knees, and the left side of his waist.

Emergency responders arrived promptly and transported him to a hospital for treatment.
The police administered a breathalyzer test to Wu and found no alcohol in his system. They do not rule out the possibility that a blind spot might have caused the accident.
Police said that Wu breached Article 44, Item 4 of the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act (道路交通管理處罰條例) by failing to yield to a pedestrian on a crosswalk. Because the incident led to Chang sustaining injuries, Wu will face a fine of between NT$7,200 (US$223) and NT$36,000 and have his license suspended for one year.
