TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – One of President-elect Lai Ching-te’s (賴清德) first duties on Monday (May 20) will be delivering an inaugural address, which is expected to feature the four themes of “stability, self-confidence, responsibility, and solidarity,” according to an incoming senior security official.
Lai's speech will address “stability” by continuing many of the fundamental policies of President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), such as maintaining the status quo in cross-strait relations. Lai is also expected to continue Taiwan's international recognition and demonstrate a willingness to take responsibility and jointly respond to challenges.
A senior official said the international community has reached a consensus about the importance of the status quo and maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. The U.S. has also called on China not to use provocative action before and after the May 20 presidential inauguration, per Liberty Times.
Lai is also expected to call upon Taiwanese citizens to exhibit more “self-confidence,” as Taiwan has gained more recognition from the international community in various fields. Lai’s speech will include his belief that the self-confidence of citizens comes from hard work, kindness, and generosity.
Lai is also expected to reiterate his previously announced "National Hope Project," a blueprint for democracy, peace, and public welfare. This will underscore Lai’s commitment to continuing Taiwan’s role in the global economy and geopolitical stability.
Lai will also address “responsibility,” as Lai’s administration aims to show the world that Taiwan is a force for good and a responsible member of international organizations. Lai will also address his response to world challenges.
Finally, Lai is expected to call for "solidarity" when facing threats from China and attempts to sow internal division. Lai will talk about opposition parties in the legislature and the challenges that Taiwan faces on the path to democracy, peace, and prosperity.
