TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – In his Monday (May 20) inaugural speech, President-elect Lai Ching-te (賴清德) will emphasize stability, self-confidence, responsibility, and solidarity as the basis for democracy, peace, and prosperity, reports said Saturday (May 18).
The elements are based on a recent review of the domestic and international situation by national security officials, per CNA. The content of the speech will form the core of the new Lai administration’s policies going forward, the officials said.
By stability, Lai means a continuation of President Tsai Ing-wen’s (蔡英文) emphasis on Taiwan’s crucial role in the global economy and regional politics. The new government will also defend the status quo against encroachment by China.
Self-confidence allowed Taiwan to raise its global profile and to win international approval for its efforts. Lai will continue policies reflecting the country’s innovative spirit and resilience, the officials said.
They added that Taiwan is a responsible member of the global community and a force for good. The country will face challenges and make real contributions to the world.
On the domestic front, the Lai administration needs to do better to bring people together and counter efforts by China to divide the public. The president and his government reflect public opinion, which is the most important base for his support, the officials said.
