TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — An elderly man who wandered on to the train tracks was struck by a Taiwan Railways Corporation train in Hualien County on Friday (May 17).
The 653 Chu-kuang passenger train reportedly struck the man on a stretch of track between Wanrong Station and Guangfu Station at 2:12 p.m., reported UDN. Amazingly, the man had only a few lacerations to his head after being struck and thrown by the force of the moving train.
The man, a 67-year-old, was conscious when the TRA staff from the train found him. He was transported to a nearby hospital for a health evaluation.
The 653 Chu-kuang train was delayed by 39 minutes due to the incident, but other trains on the line resumed normal operations by 2:30 p.m., per UDN.
Police will question the man to determine why he was on the tracks. He will likely be prosecuted and fined for trespassing or public endangerment, per reports.
Earlier in 2024, a man was killed by an express train several kilometers away in Hualien. He was struck and killed a stretch of track between Fenglin Station and Wanrong Station.
