TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Puma Shen (沈伯洋) was taken to hospital after a day of scuffles at the Legislative Yuan, reports said Friday (May 17).
The 113-member legislature was supposed to discuss and vote on bills introducing reforms to its procedures. However, sharp divisions between the DPP and the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) and Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) led to waves of clashes throughout the day.
Around 7 p.m., a group of DPP lawmakers tried to occupy the speaker’s dais to prevent the session from proceeding. KMT politicians tried to dislodge them and push them away, per CNA.
Amid shouting and scuffling, Shen was reportedly injured. He was seen being taken out of the Legislative Yuan on a stretcher and transported by ambulance to nearby National Taiwan University Hospital.
The nature of his injuries was not clear, but after he left, Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) called a pause. At least one other DPP lawmaker, Chuang Jui-hsiung, also went to hospital due to physical discomfort.
Earlier in the evening, the opposition approved a TPP motion to extend the session into the night. In one incident, DPP Legislator Kuo Kuo-wen (郭國文) ran off with documents he snatched from the desk of the Legislative Yuan secretary-general.
