TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A high school student from Taichung became the first Taiwanese to win a gold medal at the European Girl's Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO).
Chen I-an (陳羿安), a first-year student at Taichung Municipal Taichung First Senior High School took part in the 13th EGMO, which took place in Tskaltubo, Georgia, from April 11-17, reported CNA. This marked the first time Taiwan has participated in EGMO and its first gold medal at the competition.
Chen is also the first female student from the school's science program, which was established 15 years ago, to win a gold medal in this competition.
At a press conference on Thursday (May 16), the school principal, Lin Lung-yen (林隆諺), pointed out that as a mathematics competition exclusively for female students, the competition aims to encourage more girls to engage in scientific research
Chen said she has loved mathematics since she was young. Although solving problems often requires a lot of time, she said the moment she finds the correct solution fills her with a sense of accomplishment.
Initially, she did not know much about the mathematical olympiad and was unaware of the competition's content. However, through training and study groups she qualified for the national team.
After making the national team, she felt a sense of responsibility to fulfill her role as a national representative. She added winning the gold medal and bringing honor to her country made her extremely happy.
Chen plans to continue participating in the EGMO and, if given the opportunity, she would also like to compete in the International Olympiad in Informatics.
