TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Public support for same-sex marriage has risen to a record level of 56.5% five years after its legalization, the Taiwan Equality Campaign said Friday (May 17).
Taiwan became the first country in Asia to legalize gay marriage on May 24, 2019. Nepal followed suit last month, while Thailand was expected to wrap up legislative work on same-sex marriage during the year.
The opinion poll by the Taiwan Equality Campaign showed that more than 60% of parents would have a positive response if they found out their child was gay, per UDN.
Assisted reproduction for single women received a support level of more than 70%, while more than 60% approved of the practice for lesbian couples. The Ministry of Health and Welfare on Tuesday (May 14) announced amendments to the Assisted Reproduction Act clearing the way for surrogacy.
Despite the legal changes favoring LGBTQ+ individuals, discrimination online, at school, and in the workplace was still serious, according to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Fan Yun (范雲). An anti-discrimination act should be approved, while gender equality education in the classroom should be upgraded, she said.
