TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Six diplomatic allies have already submitted motions in support of Taiwan at the World Health Assembly (WHA), Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) said Wednesday (May 15).
He told the Legislative Yuan that he expected at least 11 of Taiwan’s 12 official allies, with the exception of the Vatican, to table similar proposals, per CNA. Nevertheless, it would be difficult for Taiwan to attend this year’s edition of the annual World Health Organization (WHO) event in Geneva, Switzerland, he said.
The country still has not received an invitation to the May 27-June 1 conference, as China has been blocking Taiwan since 2017. A delegation will still visit Geneva to hold bilateral discussions with participating countries.
Wu said the number of countries likely to support Taiwan’s participation was rising, with at present six already having submitted motions of support. He did not name the countries involved.
