TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan can uphold regional order and democratic values amid the intense rivalry between the U.S. and China, Legislative Deputy Speaker Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) said on Saturday (May 11).
Speaking to Tamkang University students, Chiang said it is almost impossible to discuss international issues without considering the factors of U.S.-China strategic competition, CNA reported. This dynamic makes Taiwan’s strategic value and status in the region increase daily, he said.
Taiwan can promote cross-strait peace and stability, lead in technological innovation, and contribute to global humanitarianism, he added.
Chiang said that only when the Indo-Pacific is secure can Taiwan be secure, and only when there is peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait can the Indo-Pacific order be consolidated. The world must know that Taiwan is willing to shoulder responsibilities, the deputy speaker said.
He stressed the importance of parliamentary diplomacy, which facilitates bilateral exchanges with non-diplomatic allies. Politicians from all three major Taiwan political parties meet with foreign guests, he noted.
