TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – According to the National Security Bureau (NSB), China will try to fuel divisions between the United States and the European Union, while stepping up disruption of pro-Taiwan activities in Europe, reports said Saturday (May 11).
The accusations were made in a report the top intelligence agency and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) are submitting to the Legislative Yuan for discussion Monday (May 13), per the Liberty Times. The document focuses on Taiwan’s national security given the recently completed visits by Chinese leader Xi Jinping (習近平) to France, Serbia, and Hungary.
China was planning to use France to emphasize the strategic autonomy of the European Union, while playing the EU against the U.S., according to the report. Germany’s strong economic interests in China and uncertainty about the year-end U.S. elections could work in Beijing’s favor.
China will also use its friendly relations with Serbia and Hungary to fuel divisions within Europe and promote anti-American feeling, the NSB said. The June elections for the European Parliament and legislative elections expected in the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Lithuania could give China the opportunity to influence Taiwan’s parliamentary diplomacy and interfere with pro-Taiwan actions in the EU.
The NSB concluded that while Xi’s visit did not fundamentally alter Taiwan’s situation, attention needed to be paid to mutual understandings between China, Russia, and Central European nations on Taiwan.
