TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Two ostriches were seen wandering the streets of Taichung on Thursday (May 9), prompting police to notify the local government and capture the large, flightless birds.
The two ostriches were seen taking a morning stroll on Section 3 of Xinan Road in Taichung City's Wuri District, causing a stir among commuters and students, reported Liberty Times. Officers from Wuri Precinct were dispatched to drive them toward a nearby parking lot.
At 6:40 a.m., officers at Xinan Police Station received a report of two ostriches running over Xiwei Bridge. Police officers followed them and, together with Tsai Min-yang (蔡敏陽), the borough chief of Nanli Neighborhood, guided the ostriches into a parking lot, cordoned them off, and assigned officers to stand guard.
Car owners were reportedly frightened to approach the area of the road where the birds were wandering when they arrived for work.
Taichung City Government Agriculture Bureau said its animal husbandry department dispatched personnel to the scene. The birds were taken to the department and temporarily placed under the supervision of the department's head Ho Wen-ying (何文鶯).
Officers suspect the ostriches may have escaped from a farm in Changhua County. The authorities are urging the owner to come forward to claim the birds.
