TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of National Defense announced the tender for a new round of comprehensive maintenance contracts for its Kiowa helicopters on Monday (May 6).
The project is estimated to cost NT$2.08 billion (US$ 64.35 million) to ensure the helicopters fly after nearly 30 years in service, Liberty Times reported. The opening of bids is scheduled for June 4.
Taiwan purchased 26 Kiowas in 1991 and an additional 13 in 1997 and received them between 1999 and 2002. Thirty-seven Kiowas remain in active service within the Army's 601st and 602nd Air Cavalry Brigades and Flight Training Command.
The Kiowa is equipped with a mast-mounted sight, which includes a thermal imaging system, low-light television, laser rangefinder/designator, and an optical boresight system, according to Military.com. These systems allow the helicopter to conduct day and night operations in any weather condition.
The helicopters can also fire Stinger, Hellfire, and TOW missiles.
