TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Legislative Yuan President Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) said he was grateful to U.S. President Joe Biden and his emphasis on peace in the Taiwan Strait during a meeting with the Association of State Democratic Chairs (ASDC) head Mike Schmuhl on Wednesday (May 1).
Han said exchanges between the Legislative Yuan and U.S. Congress were important for Taiwan and mentioned that 72 out of 113 legislators were members of the Taiwan-US Inter-Parliamentary Amity Association, CNA reported.
Schmuhl noted that there was also the Taiwan Congressional Caucus, with approximately 100 Democratic Party members. The caucus is the largest one in Congress, with 299 members.
Schmuhl said his delegation has already met with several government officials and NGOs. So far on their visit, the group has observed Taiwan’s flourishing democracy and innovative economy, he said.
The ASDC chair pointed out that Biden signed legislation earlier this year to bolster defense and security in the Indo-Pacific region, underscoring Washington's emphasis on regional peace and stability.
The ASDC was established to “help build strong State Democratic Parties to elect Democrats at all levels of office,” according to its website.
