TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan’s May Jam, founded by German musician Axel Schunn, will begin this weekend, featuring 28 bands from Taiwan and abroad.
A press conference on Monday (April 29) at Tainan City Hall announced that May Jam will be held at Hutoupi Scenic Area (虎頭埤風景區) on Saturday and Sunday (May 4–5). The location has been described as a smaller version of Sun Moon Lake, a wonderful natural setting for everyone to experience musical performances.
According to Tainan Tourism Bureau, Hutoupi is Taiwan's first reservoir spanning more than 150 years. May is filled with beautiful scenery and pleasant weather, per UDN.
May Jam attracts many expatriate guests who enjoy music in an outdoor setting. Many of the bands are also comprised of foreign performers such as the Combobulators, More the Merrier, Guhit Band, Lemon Grass, and Akuba Funk.
Schunn said this year’s event selected 28 bands from 240 band applications. He said the selection process ensured the best performances, including one act from Japan.
This year’s performances run the gamut of genres, including folk, pop, rock, punk, and Indigenous music, Schunn said. He said the audience will enjoy an auditory and visual experience like no other.
Several artistic and cultural activities will also be available over the two days, including a tree-climbing area, yoga activities, and African drums. Those interested can contact the official event website to register.
Tainan Tourism Bureau will also arrange a market with food, creative clothing, local farmers, and drinks. In addition, a free shuttle bus to Houtoupi Scenic Area will depart Tainan Bus Station every hour beginning at 11 a.m., with return trips on the hour.
