TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Saturday (April 26) the establishment of an AI safety committee includes two Taiwanese business leaders, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang (黃仁勳) and AMD CEO Lisa Su (蘇姿丰).
Twenty-two business leaders will sit on the advisory committee, which also includes top executives from OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Alphabet, AWS, and Cisco Systems. The committee will make recommendations to government agencies related to transportation, power grid, and network service providers, per CNA.
The DHS said the creation of the committee will "prevent and prepare for AI-related disruptions to critical services that impact national or economic security, public health, or safety." DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said the committee will ensure that AI will not be a threat to critical government services.
Mayorkas said the committee will provide recommendations to protect utilities, transportation, information technology, food and agriculture, and financial services. Mayorkas added the committee will not only better ensure the U.S. is better protected from AI threats, but will also seek practical AI solutions to improve the lives of citizens.
The committee will meet for the first time in early May. Future meetings of the committee will be held every quarter.
