TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A tourist was crushed to death by a falling tree while hiking during a storm in Kaohsiung on Friday (April 26), prompting officials to close the lake for a week.
The 66-year-old man surnamed Lee (李) was alone on a trail in the Chengcing Lake Scenic Area in Niaosong District at about 10 a.m. when he was struck by a tree that fell onto the road, reported the Taiwan Water Corporation (TWC).
Lee had lacerations to his head and legs and was pronounced dead after being sent to the hospital for emergency treatment.
The 7th Branch of the TWC said in recent days, due to the loosening of soil caused by heavy rain after earthquakes “an unfortunate accident” occurred when a tourist was pinned by a collapsed tree.
According to the Central Weath Administration (CWA), heavy rain is still likely in the Kaohsiung area on Friday and Saturday (April 27). To ensure the safety of tourists and prevent further accidents, some trees will be cleared and trimmed.
The branch office said that the Chengcing Lake Scenic Area will be temporarily closed from noon Friday for one week. After confirming it is safe, it is expected to reopen on May 3.
