TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Kaohsiung’s Municipal Taoyuan Junior High School took home nine medals at the 2024 National Middle School Athletic Games this week.
According to a press release on Thursday (April 25), judo team captain Lin Pei-hsin (林沛芯), a member of the Bunun Indigenous peoples, won the gold medal in girls’ grade four division judo, per CNA. Despite a serious shoulder injury from previous training accidents, which caused her to miss last year’s competition, Lin pushed hard and won gold.
Wu Yu-hsuan (吳妤萱), who competed in weightlifting, completed a snatch of 55 kg and a lift of 77 kg, totaling 132 kg, earning her the silver medal in the girls' 64 kg class.
The school said that her family initially did not approve of her transferring to a weightlifting class, but with her optimism and determination, she convinced her family and embarked on the path of weightlifting.
Other athletes from the junior high include Wang Chiao-le (王巧樂), Ke Chih-ying (柯芷穎), Chang Wei-ting (張維婷), Lin Kuo-hsiang (林國祥), Hsieh Jo-han (謝若涵), and Kao Meng-hsuan (高孟軒), who each won bronze medals in various weight classes of judo, per Liberty Times.
The 2024 National Middle School Athletic Games ran from April 20-25.
