TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Students from Shizugawa Junior High School in Minamisanriku, Japan, launched a fundraiser for Hualien’s earthquake victims on Tuesday (April 23).
Students took the initiative to organize the event following the 7.2 magnitude quake that rocked Taiwan on April 3, per CNA. In a video, students can be seen putting money in a donation box as they make their way to class.
Shizugawa Junior High School’s student council launched the campaign to repay the donations from Taiwan following the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, Sendai Television reported. Minamisanriku received 2.22 billion yen (NT$464 million) in aid from Taiwan for recovery efforts, FNN Japan reported.
Shizugawa Junior High School’s student council president said Taiwan provided substantial assistance for rebuilding the town’s hospital after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. The fundraiser continues until Friday (April 26) and proceeds will be donated to the Hualien victims through the Japanese Red Cross Society.
