TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Kuomintang (KMT) Legislator Fu Kun-chi (傅崐萁) canceled his trip to China following the series of earthquakes that struck Taiwan on Monday (April 22) and Tuesday (April 23).
Multiple earthquakes struck Taiwan on Monday, including a magnitude 5.9 earthquake at 10:11 p.m. and a magnitude 6.3 quake on Tuesday (April 23) at 2:32 a.m. As a result, Fu announced his decision to cancel his trip to focus on recovery efforts, reported CNA.
Fu was originally scheduled to leave Taiwan on April 25.
Fu said that the recent earthquakes once again demonstrated the crisis facing the eastern railway and highway system. Only through the construction of elevated bridges and sturdy tunnels can rockfall hazards be avoided, providing a safe route for the people of Hualien and Taitung, the KMT party member said.
Fu stressed that he must remain steadfast in the Legislative Yuan to promote the completion of legislation regarding National Freeway 6 and Hualien-Taitung Expressway. He also said that at this critical time of natural disasters, not only is post-disaster reconstruction needed, but also the revitalization of all trades and industries.
So far, four buildings in Hualien have collapsed due to the quake. There have been no reports of casualties, Reuters reported.
