TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Two empty buildings have tilted after a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Hualien early on Tuesday morning (April 23).
Following a series of earthquakes the previous day, a magnitude 6.3 quake struck east Taiwan at 2:32 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). Two buildings in Hualien have since partially collapsed, but there are no reports of injuries, CNA.
Teng Tzu-yu (鄧子榆), director of the Hualien County Construction Department, said the Full Hotel (富凱大飯店) on Zhongshan Road and the Tong Shuai building (統帥大樓) on Mingli Road in downtown Hualien had buckled and are tilting. Teng said the Tong Shuai building had been listed as code red, the highest level of damage following the magnitude 7.2 earthquake on April 3.

Teng said the Tong Shuai building had been listed as code red and residents had moved out earlier in the month. He said the Full Hotel had not been listed as a code red or code yellow, but was also closed and unoccupied as it was undergoing renovations.
Code red refers to buildings where primary structures, such as columns, beams, exterior walls, floors, and foundation voids are damaged or the building is leaning to a certain extent. Code yellow refers to buildings where non-primary structures, such as interior partitions or ceilings, are damaged or nearby buildings are leaning to a certain extent.
