TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The temperature in Tainan’s Yujing District hit 39.7 C on Sunday (April 21) just after noon, marking the highest temperature recorded so far in Taiwan this year.
Residents throughout Taiwan, especially southern Taiwan, expressed surprise that temperatures were already this high in mid-April. Over the previous week., temperatures continued to climb, with last week’s highest temperature recorded at 37.1 C in Tainan’s Nanhua District on April 14, reported UDN.
Residents in Kaohsiung were also struggling with severe heat on Sunday, with a high of 38.7 C. The Central Weather Administration (CWA) confirmed that high-temperature records for April were also broken in Chiayi and Taichung this weekend, with temps of 36.8 C and 35.2 C respectively.
The CWA warned that a high-humidity southwesterly wind may cause temperatures of 30 C up to 35 C throughout most of central and southern Taiwan from Sunday through Monday (April 22).
Warm temperatures around 30 C are expected for the rest of Taiwan on Monday during the day, with scattered showers from northern Taiwan to Taichung lasting into the evening.
Temperatures will drop into the mid-twenties for most of the country from Monday evening for the rest of the week. Rain is expected across Taiwan from Tuesday (April 23) to Saturday (April 27).
