TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The leader of the Kuomintang (KMT) caucus at the Legislative Yuan, Fu Kun-chi (傅崐萁), is planning a trip to China, reports said Wednesday (April 17).
Present and former leaders of the opposition party have been raising the frequency of their visits to China. Former President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) met Chinese leader Xi Jinping (習近平) in Beijing on April 10, while KMT Vice Chair Andrew Hsia (夏立言) scheduled trips last December, in March and in late April.
Fu said that during the April 25-28 trip with other KMT lawmakers, they would only stay in Beijing to meet with Taiwanese business people and students, Radio Taiwan International (RTI) reported. He would not take any message with him on behalf of KMT Chair Eric Chu (朱立倫), he said.
Fu added he wanted to contribute to a revival of trade relations between Taiwan and China. Before his trip, he would organize a hearing to listen to the wishes of the rank and file. The farming and fishing sectors would be especially interested in improving trade with China, he said.
In a separate media interview, Hsia denied there were plans for Chu to visit any part of China during 2024. He would not exclude the possibility of such a trip “if the time was ripe,” RTI quoted the KMT vice chair as saying.
