TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Ministry of Environment plans to expand a ban on plastic bags to traditional markets, stalls, and breakfast restaurants, reports said Wednesday (April 17).
Taiwan currently restricts the handing out of free plastic bags from most restaurants, convenience stores, supermarkets, and other shops. The ministry said it would reveal its plans once a new proposal to restrict single-use plastics was ready, possibly next year, per CNA.
Lawmakers pointed out Wednesday the use of plastic bags in 2023 had increased to 208,000 metric tons, up 1,300 tons from the previous year. Restrictions on the use of plastic straws were also inadequate, as 90% of beverage shops offered the straws to take-out customers, legislators said.
The ministry said it was discussing an expansion of the ban on free single-use plastic bags. Topics of discussion included a timetable for introducing new restrictions and where they would apply.
As the United Nations is planning to launch a Global Plastics Treaty later this year, Taiwan’s ban should be compatible with the international measures, according to the environment ministry.
