TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Police on Monday (April 15) found a cat that had survived in the rubble of a building 12 days after the April 3 earthquake.
The powerful quake caused the “Uranus Building” on Xuanyuan Road in Hualien to tilt precariously and the county government began demolishing it on April 5. Work has been sporadically paused in an attempt to rescue five pet cats trapped inside, with a calico cat named “Hua Hua” the latest to be found on Monday, reported UDN.
Over the past several days, a cat named "Orange" was rescued on April 9 after it was pinned behind burglar bars, while a second orange cat, whose owner died trying to save it, was retrieved on April 13. By Monday, only two cats were still unaccounted for, Hua Hua, who lived on the eighth floor, and a black and white cat named “Ouni” on the fifth.
During a live building demolition broadcast on Monday evening, viewers spotted Hua Hua, but attempts to capture it were hindered by the rubble. At about 7 p.m., police found the cat on Huagang Street.
The owner then showed up and called out, “Hua Hua come home!” The cat then entered a trap cage upon hearing its owner's call.

The feline was slightly dehydrated and had minor scrapes, but no life-threatening injuries.
As for Ou Ni, it briefly appeared in the live broadcast but then disappeared. The owner uploaded an online post describing the cat's timid nature and was concerned that it might be too afraid to leave the building or could be hiding in dark corners.
The owner hoped nearby residents would keep an eye out for Ou Ni and hoped their furry friend would soon return home.
