TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Police and medical responders in Miaoli’s Nanzhuang Township rescued a family of four after the RV they were driving slipped downhill on a mountain road on Saturday (April 13).
The group were on thier way to enjoy a weekend camping trip in Nanzhuang Township with another family traveling in a second vehicle. During the drive, the family's RV skidded offroad and tumbled over 40 meters down the hillside, reported UDN.
Friends traveling in the other vehicle reached the camping area ahead of the family and became concerned after they failed to arrive. The Miaoli Fire Department received a report of an accident about 4 p.m. and rushed to the scene, reported CNA.
The vehicle was driven by a 63-year-old father, with his 62-year-old wife, two children in their 20s, and the family dog as passengers. The father and children suffered minor scrapes and bruises, but were able to walk following the incident.
The wife, who was in the passenger seat, had the most serious injuries and was in shock when paramedics arrived. She was reportedly pinned under the dashboard, and suffered damage to her chest and a broken leg.
Using ropes, pulleys, and a field stretcher, rescuers hoisted the victims up the hill to safety. All four were taken to Wei Gong Memorial Hospital in Toufen City for treatment, per UDN.
The cause of the accident is under investigation. Authorities suspect the wet roads as well as the driver’s unfamiliarity with the area and steering capabilities of the RV all contributed to the accident.
Police in Mioali remind drivers to pay close attention to weather conditions and maintain safe speeds when driving on mountain roads.
