TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Government officials are doubtful they will be ready to declare this year’s May 1 a day off for everybody, reports said Saturday (April 13).
The day is already known in Taiwan as Labor Day, but only private sector employees have the day off, and not other groups of the population such as teachers and students. A proposal has been under discussion to allow everyone to share in the holiday, as is the practice in most other countries.
Government departments were continuing their discussions on the subject to try and find a consensus, per CNA. The Cabinet was also consulting representatives of various social groups to hear their opinions about the possible change, officials said.
However, it was unlikely a decision could be reached and implemented this month as May 1 was fewer than three weeks away. A rapid change could cause problems for members of the public planning for the day, while government employees at service desks would also have to reschedule their tasks.
Earlier, Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) and teachers organizations expressed support for the expansion of Labor Day to cover state services and schools.
