TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The number of missing persons in the wake of Taiwan’s 7.2 magnitude earthquake on April 3, was reduced by one on Saturday (April 13), after search crews discovered the body of a man near a quarry in Taroko National Park.
On the 11th day of search operations, responders in Hualien discovered the body of a man surnamed Hsiao (蕭) at approximately 11:45 a.m. Hsiao was said to be a driver whose truck was buried under rubble near the Heren quarry area of Taroko National Park, reported UDN.
A team of 19 was dispatched to the area Saturday morning at 8 a.m. It was the first time the remote area was able to be accessed by heavy machinery.
Around 11 a.m. crews noticed a strong odor from one area. After removing about 5 meters of rubble, they discovered Hsiao’s truck and were able to remove Hsiao’s body from the crushed vehicle about 15 minutes later.
Hsiao’s body was being transported down the mountain by noon. With the discovery of Hsiao’s remains, only two people remain missing in Taiwan as a result of the April 3 quake. They have been identified as a married Singaporean-Australian couple.
