TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — In response to the trilateral summit of the U.S., Japan, and the Philippines, held in Washington D.C. on Thursday (April 11), Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) thanked the three nations for their affirmation to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait.
In a press release published Friday (April 12), the ministry said that it welcomed the statement from President Joe Biden, Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr,
In their joint statement, the three countries pledged to further cooperation and exchanges, and to promote prosperity and security throughout the Indo-Pacific region. The statement also expressed concern about China’s dangerous and aggressive behavior in the region, noting its militarization and unlawful claims in the South China Sea.
The statement said the Taiwan Strait is an “indispensable element of global security and prosperity.” The three nations also agreed that there is no change in their basic positions on Taiwan, and called for a peaceful resolution to disputes between Taiwan and China.
As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will continue to work together with the U.S., Japan, the Philippines, and other democratic partners, to promote peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, according to the MOFA press release.
