TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan will take Lunar New Year lanterns to California’s San Gabriel, hoping to boost the relationship and tourism between the two.
A delegation led by Tourism Administration Deputy Director-General Lin Hsin-jen (林信任) met with San Gabriel Mayor John Wu (吳程遠) and Vice Mayor Denise Menchaca on Thursday (April 11), per CNA. The two parties signed a letter of intent that means Taiwan will donate Lunar New Year Lanterns for the city’s annual San Gabriel Lunar Lantern Festival, per San Gabriel Valley Tribune.
“Adding these traditional lanterns to our festival will enhance the experience for our community and visitors,” Wu said, per San Gabriel Valley Tribune.
Wu, who was born in Hong Kong, said that as a first-generation immigrant who was raised in Taiwan, being able to work in public office in the U.S. gives him a sense of pride in the country’s diversity. He thanked the Tourism Administration for its generosity and desire to promote tourism between Taiwan and San Gabriel.
Lin, who was stationed in Los Angeles from 2008 to 2015, had previously held a Lantern Festival at Dodger Stadium, CNA reported. During his tenure in the city, he got to know mayor Wu.
On this trip to the U.S., Lin also took the opportunity to go to the Seatrade Cruise Global held from Monday (April 8) to Tuesday (April 11) to promote Taiwan as a cruise destination.
