TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan is receiving more mentions at international meetings not just because it is a democracy, but also a global force for good, Washington envoy Alexander Yui (俞大㵢) said Wednesday (April 10).
In an interview with Yahoo TV, Taiwan’s top representative in the U.S. said the country had become a prominent topic of conversation at bilateral and multilateral conferences.
Yui specifically mentioned the upcoming summit between the U.S., Japan, and the Philippines, Radio Taiwan International (RTI) reported. As neighbors, Japan and the Philippines would be directly affected if anything happened to Taiwan, the diplomat said.
Turning to Wednesday's meeting between former President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) and Chinese leader Xi Jinping (習近平) in Beijing, Yui said the talks could not be compared to the meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio.
As Taiwan was a democracy, Ma had the right to travel where he wanted and meet whom he wanted, but he was a former head of state from an opposition party, Yui said. He cannot represent any party or government to hold talks with China, he added.
