TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan’s Chung Hwa University of Medical Technology (CUMT) hosted an Eid al-Fitr event on Wednesday (April 10) in celebration of the Islamic holiday.
Tainan City Government said in a press release on Wednesday that the event opened with CUMT’s Taiko drum club and traditional dances. Attendees participated in obstacle games and sampled Southeast Asian delicacies, per CNA.
Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃位哲), who joined the festivities, expressed special thanks to CUMT, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, and Kun Shan University for their joint efforts in organizing the Eid activities.
Huang also said he hoped that friends from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and other regions could enjoy celebrating Eid together.
The holiday holds significant importance for Muslims, similar to the Lunar New Year for Taiwanese, the city said. Tainan has a total of 64,553 foreign migrant workers, among whom there are 20,162 Indonesian workers, accounting for 30%, it added.
Students organized the event so that foreign students could relieve their homesickness, the city explained. The city said it hopes that students can regard Tainan as a second hometown.
Eid al-Fitr (“Hari Raya” in Malaysia) is one of Islam’s two primary holidays, following a month-long period of fasting called Ramadan.
