TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 5.1 earthquake rocked northeast Taiwan at 1:09 p.m. on Monday (April 8), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
The epicenter of the quake was 32.1 km northeast of Hualien County Hall, with a shallow focal depth of 5.1 km, the CWA said. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7, which gauges the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
The quake’s intensity registered a 4 in Hualien County and Yilan County. An intensity level of 2 was reported in Nantou County, Taichung, Hsinchu County, Taoyuan, Miaoli County, and New Taipei.
An intensity level of 1 was measured in Taipei, Hsinchu, Keelung, Changhua County, Yunlin County, and Chiayi County.
No injuries or damage from the quake had been reported at the time of publication.
