TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A video surfaced last week showing an older man calmly seated in his chair watching TV as a magnitude 7.2 earthquake rocked Taiwan.
The quake struck eastern Taiwan at 7:58 a.m. on Wednesday (April 3), according to the Central Weather Administration. It was the strongest tremor in the country in 25 years and was felt across the nation, but a video shared on social media showed an elderly man remaining amazingly calm throughout the earthquake, reported ETtoday.
Female Threads user ychhhi_ uploaded surveillance camera footage from her grandfather's living room taken during the earthquake. In the caption, the woman wrote, “My grandfather is a capybara. Why is he so calm? He even sat under the electric fan.”
Despite dramatic shaking recorded by the camera, the man walked to his chair, reached for the remote control, and sat down. He then casually turned off his ceiling fan and continued to watch TV as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened.
The woman said that her mother had told her that the house was built well and withstood the 1999 Jiji earthquake. “So things may not have shaken much, and grandpa really didn’t feel it, but he was really calm. He has been there for several years," she said.
She added that a few years ago, he had fallen off his bicycle into a ditch, broke his hand, and still managed to climb up and ride his bicycle back home. “For someone in their 70s, he's really quite tough,” she said.
