TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan has registered over 700 aftershocks following a powerful earthquake that struck eastern Taiwan last week, but the daily frequency is declining.
The magnitude 7.2 earthquake rocked northeast Taiwan at 7:58 a.m. on Wednesday (April 3), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
As of 8:30 a.m. Monday (April 8), the CWA recorded 739 aftershocks, including a magnitude 6.5 tremor that occurred at 8:11 a.m. on April 3 and a magnitude 6.5 quake at 10:14 a.m. that same day. There have been 25 aftershocks between magnitude 5 and 6, 222 aftershocks between magnitude 4 and 5, and 490 between magnitude 3 and 4.
The CWA on Thursday (April 4) reported 315 aftershocks in the first 24 hours after the 7.2 quake. It reported 167 aftershocks 48 hours later on Friday (April 5).
On Saturday (April 6), 111 aftershocks were reported, while on Sunday (April 7) there were 89. So far on Monday, there have been 58 aftershocks.
