TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Former Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) arrived in Beijing on Sunday (April 7) afternoon following a visit to Xian.
Ma is leading a 20-member delegation around China to hold youth exchanges. Beijing is the last stop on their itinerary, CNA reported.
Ma will visit Peking University, the Badaling section of the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the China Academy of Space Technology, Marco Polo Bridge, the Museum of the War of Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the National Speed Skating Oval, and the National Stadium. Also on the docket is a possible meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping (習近平).
The proposed meeting was originally scheduled for April 8 but was moved to April 10, which coincides with a U.S.-Japan summit. The discussions between U.S. President Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida will cover bilateral military cooperation, the growing Chinese military threat toward Taiwan, and other security concerns.
Ma and Xi last met in 2015 in Singapore, where they discussed cross-strait relations behind closed doors. Since then, China has ramped up military activity near Taiwan and continued its campaign of political and economic coercion against Taiwan.
Last month, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell emphasized the importance of peace in the Taiwan Strait in a phone call with Chinese Executive Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu (馬朝旭).
