TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolted Taiwan Saturday (April 6) evening at 6:47, just three days after a magnitude 7.2 tremor caused significant damage.
The latest quake struck 12.4 kilometers southeast of Hualien County Hall under the Pacific Ocean, at a focal depth of 25.1 km, the Central Weather Administration reported.
While its magnitude was similar to several aftershocks in the wake of Wednesday morning’s main quake, Saturday’s shock was felt across large parts of the country.
The quake’s biggest intensity level, which gauges the actual effect of a quake, reached level 4 in Hualien County and part of Nantou County, with New Taipei City and Kaohsiung City reaching level 2. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7, which gauges the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
Rescue and repair operations around Hualien County were being conducted at a due to the risk of more aftershocks provoking rockfalls and tiles to fall off buildings.
