TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Moments after a 7.2 magnitude quake occurred off the coast of Hualien on Wednesday (April 3), a fire was reported on the campus of National Dong Hwa University in Hualien’s Shoufeng Township.
The earthquake struck at 7:58 a.m. and the fire on the fourth floor of the physics and engineering building at Dong Hwa University was reported at 8:04 a.m. Firefighters were dispatched to the campus and spent two hours getting the blaze under control, reported UDN.
It is suspected that damaged lab materials caused the fire. However, an investigation will be carried out to confirm this.
Secretary-General of Dong Hwa University, Liao Ching-hua (廖慶華), said firefighters responded to the emergency, which was likely caused by items falling in storage. He said that there were no students or teachers in the building at the time of the fire.
Due to the large amount of poisonous chemicals stored in the building, and on the fourth floor, poison control experts were consulted when putting out the fire, per reports.
