TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) lauded the close relations between Taiwan and the U.S. during a closed-door meeting with visiting American Institute in Taiwan Chair Laura Rosenberger on Wednesday (April 3).
Her trip to Taiwan signifies the importance Washington places on maintaining stable Taiwan-U.S. relations, Han said, per CNA. There is generally a consensus on defense and diplomacy matters between the three major Taiwan political parties, he said.
Han noted that as many as 72 lawmakers are members of the Taiwan-US Inter-Parliamentary Amity Association. This indicated the Legislative Yuan’s strong emphasis on exchanges with U.S. congress members, Han said.
Rosenberger praised the Taiwanese for holding free and fair elections in January, showcasing Taiwan as a beacon of democracy. The U.S. will continue to maintain friendly relations with Taiwan across the political spectrum, fostering cooperation and exchanges regardless of political affiliations, she said.
The chair reiterated the historically successful partnership between the U.S. and Taiwan, which has transcended party lines in both countries, Rosenberger said.
She pointed out that U.S. policy toward Taiwan has remained consistent over the past 45 years, based on the Taiwan Relations Act, the Three Communiques, and the Six Assurances. She said she believed the bilateral partnership was the best it has ever been and that she looked forward to working with Han to promote bilateral relations and cooperation.
This trip is Rosenberger’s fifth to Taiwan since she became AIT chair in March 2023. She is meeting with high-level government officials to discuss continued U.S.-Taiwan regional security, trade and investment, and people-to-people educational and cultural ties, according to AIT.
