TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — In the hours following the magnitude 7.2 earthquake on Wednesday (April 3), President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and Cabinet members were in the Central Emergency Operation Center to oversee Taiwan’s disaster response measures.
A press release said officials from all relevant ministries are working to coordinate response measures in the wake of damage caused nationwide by the largest earthquake Taiwan has experienced in 25 years. Tsai assured citizens the central government was well-prepared and working hard to deal with the situation.
Representatives from the following agencies were all present to report on the ongoing situation: Central Weather Administration, National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction, Ministry of Transportation and Communication, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of National Defense, and the Council of Agriculture.
While receiving briefs about the situation, Tsai instructed ministry officials to remain in contact with local government leaders to ensure a comprehensive report of damages and crisis response measures. Tsai said the nation is ready to deploy all resources necessary to ensure public safety.
The Army is reportedly on alert and prepared to assist with disaster response.
The Presidential Office urged all residents to pay attention to the latest notices and warnings issued by government agencies. The president also asked everyone to verify online reports related to the earthquake to avoid sharing potentially harmful misinformation.
