TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s National Communications Commission (NCC) reported 172 telecom base stations affected by the earthquake that occurred on Wednesday (April 3).
The 7.2-magnitude quake mainly disrupted telecom operations in Yilan and Hualien, reported CNA. Stations from all three of Taiwan’s major telecom companies, Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, and FarEasTone were affected.
NCC Vice Chairperson Wong Po-tsung (翁柏宗) said the three major telecom companies reported that their base stations were offline due to power transmission interruptions caused by the earthquake. Chunghwa Telecom reported 125 affected base stations, Taiwan Mobile reported 33, and FarEasTone Telecom reported 14, Wong said.
“Overall, the affected areas are mainly in Yilan and Hualien, with mobile network-related services primarily affected,” Wong said.
“The NCC has requested that telecom companies make every effort to repair the damage to enable communication for the public, and the companies estimate that repairs can be completed today,” he added.
Taiwan Mobile said that its stations in Hualien were affected and that repairs are underway, Liberty Times reported. Far EasTone said most of its damage took place in Hualien and it is monitoring the situation.
