TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A truck driver and three hikers were reported dead in Hualien County after being hit by falling rocks during the magnitude 7.2 earthquake Wednesday (April 3) morning.
The first casualty was the driver of a truck on the Su Hua Highway, the main road connecting Yilan County with Hualien County. Falling rocks hit the front of the truck, with the driver showing no signs of life, the Liberty Times reported.
As the Qingshui Tunnel on the same route was closed off due to rockfalls and the danger posed by aftershocks, the authorities said they were unable to provide more details.
In a separate incident, rocks hit a group of seven hikers moving along the Dekalun Trail in Xiulin Township. When police reached the site, they found two women dead, while a third was diagnosed with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Other members of the group were reportedly slightly injured.
Hualien County reported a total of 98 injured, mostly by glass, falling tiles and bricks, or by objects at home. More than 100 people were moved from damaged buildings in the county to open spaces for their safety, the authorities said.
